A Visit with Marlow Kelly!

Happy Holidays! We’re getting close! And today, we continue our Countdown to Christmas with author Marlow Kelly!

Marlow Kelly picAlthough I come from a large Irish family, Christmas at our house is a quiet event. I live in Alberta, Canada with my husband of twenty years and our two children. My Mom, sisters and cousins all live in England and Ireland. My husband is almost as bad, where we live in the west, his mother and brother live in Ontario and Nova Scotia – eastern Canada.

We have the usual trappings of Christmas; a tree, presents, giving to others and lots of good cheer, but food plays an important role in our festivities. I know that sounds bad, but what you have to understand is that we don’t have cookies and cakes in the house as a rule.

Why? Because I have a sugar problem… Once I start eating sugar I can’t stop.

The other reason we don’t have a lot of goodies in the house is because my youngest child is allergic to peanuts and most baked goods are out of bounds. This means if we want cinnamon buns, scones, or cakes I have to bake them and who has the time. Plus it suits my waistline, and blood sugar level, to do without.

So on Christmas we make up for lost time and bake. We also try all sorts of goodies we wouldn’t normally eat.

We start the day with a buffet breakfast that will include fruit, fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, banana bread, and cookies.

Then lunch will be another buffet of veggies and dip, spiral sandwiches, mini quiche, and Hors d’oeuvre sized salmon wellington – yum

Then we have the traditional turkey dinner and for dessert we will have homemade, peanut-free chocolate cream pie. I know chocolate cream pie isn’t your traditional Christmas dessert, but we’ve never been fruitcake people.

I finish the day sipping a Kahlua liqueur while my husband and kids do the dishes.

I thought those of you who suffer with nut / peanut allergies might enjoy my recipe for peanut-free chocolate cream pie. This is a no-bake recipe that can be made the day before and kept in the fridge.

Marlow’s Recipe:

(I can’t wait to try this!)

Chocolate Cream Pie

I pack peanut-free chocolate cookies

¼ butter melted

2 cups peanut free chocolate chips (I use Enjoy Life brand)

½ cup canned sweetened condensed milk

2 pkg. (4 people serving sized) chocolate pudding mix (I use Jell-O and although I’ve never had a problem, please remember to always read the label.)

2 cups 2% milk

2 cups cool whip lite.

This pie is comprised of 4 different chocolate layers. Start from the bottom and work up. This is an easy recipe that doesn’t need to be rushed. It is also an excellent choice if you have little hands helping you.

 The crust:

Crush the cookies and mix with the melted butter. Shape into the bottom and sides of an 8inch pie dish.

Chocolate layer:

Melt chocolate chips in microwave. (Do not allow to boil.) Mix with sweetened condensed milk and pour over the crumb crust.

1st Pudding layer:

Pour pudding mixes and milk in a large bowl and whisk for 2 minutes until thick. Divide pudding. Spread half of the mix on top of the melted chocolate layer.

2nd Pudding Layer

Gently stir the remaining pudding with ½ the container of Cool Whip and spread on top of the pie.

Allow to cool for at least 2 hours in the fridge.

Before serving add the remaining Cool Whip.

 And Read Marlow’s Books!

With her home destroyed she is forced to revisit her past and prove once and for all she is a woman of courage.

Blurb from A Woman of Courage:

When an injured Fianna Byrne turns up at Connell O’Neill’s gate twelve years after their separation he knows this could be his last chance to find happiness with the woman he loves.

False accusations against Fianna had strained relations between their clans and forced Connell, under Irish law, to divorce her. Their disastrous three-month relationship left Fianna pregnant and heartbroken. She has avoided Duncarraig and her ex-husband ever since.

But with her home obliterated by the Vikings, Fianna must face her past in order to save her son, and prove once and for all she is a woman of courage.

Excerpt from A Woman of Courage:

Twelve years ago she’d been Connell’s wife. His devastating rejection of A Woman of Courage - Marlow Kellyher, after only three months of marriage, and their subsequent divorce caused a pain so real it twisted her insides. The hostilities that ensued after their separation, followed by an uneasy truce when she found she was pregnant with their son, Lorcan, made it prudent to restrict her contact.

During their short marriage he had weakened her in a way no other man could. She’d transformed into a woman so overtaken with lust she’d been blind to everything, including his true feelings. With Connell all her instincts, control, and intellect became like overcooked oats, a sludge that thought of nothing except him.

Her breath caught when her former husband strode out of the large central house, marching toward her. His long limbs and easy stride accentuated the rippling muscles of his legs. Every movement emphasized his grace and strength. He was still tall and broad, with long, smooth, black hair and a black beard to match. He would have been too handsome, too pretty, if it hadn’t been for his large crooked nose. That imperfection added to his allure, making him more appealing. Her pulse quickened, and her body warmed with need. She forgot her reason for being here, forgot everything except him. Damn it. Even in her injured state, with everything she had endured, he still had the ability to turn her mind to mud.

A bit about Marlow:

After being thrown out of England for refusing to drink tea, Marlow Kelly made her way to Canada where she found love, a home and a pug named Max. She also discovered her love of storytelling. Encouraged by her husband, children and let’s not forget Max, she started putting her ideas to paper. Her need to write about strong women in crisis drives her stories and her curiosity regarding the lives and loves of historical figures are the inspiration for her characters.
